Redefining Menstrual Hygiene for Intersex Persons: A Step Towards Inclusivity

In addressing the unique menstrual hygiene needs of intersex individuals, the Kenya Footballers Welfare Association (KEFWA) proudly represented its commitment to equality and human rights. The event, a landmark moment in the fight for inclusivity, saw the launch of #InclusiFit, the first-ever sanitary boxer designed specifically for intersex persons who menstruate.

KEFWA, an association that tirelessly fights for the rights of Kenyan professional athletes, was well-represented by a number of athletes who play for various teams both in Kenya and abroad. Among the standout representatives was Chris Kach affectionately known as “Kachali”, Her presence at the event was particularly significant given her distinguished role as an advocate for human rights and her recognition as the East Africa Intersex Human Rights Defender by Tacef last year in an event, held in South Africa, celebrated her as a tireless advocate for the intersex community.

Currently, Kach, a key player for Kenya Women Premier League (KWPL) champions Kenya Police Bullets, Chris Kach has been an instrumental and vocal voice for KEFWA in calling for equality and respect for the human rights of intersex persons. Her efforts have been critical in raising awareness about the unique challenges faced by intersex individuals, especially in the realm of menstrual hygiene.

Despite gaining recognition from the government, intersex individuals in Kenya continue to face significant challenges in accessing menstrual products that cater to their unique anatomical needs. Traditional menstrual products often fall short, leading to discomfort and inefficacy. This gap in menstrual health management has been a significant barrier to the dignity and well-being of intersex persons.

“After being recognised by the government intersex persons still had to face difficulties when accessing menstrual products since all products were not suitable for their body anatomy We had a chance to grace the launch of the first ever sanitary boxer for intersex persons who experience menstrual cycle. #inclusifit,” Noted Kach.

The launch of #InclusiFit represents a groundbreaking solution to this issue. The sanitary boxer is designed to provide comfort, efficacy, and dignity to intersex individuals who experience menstruation. By addressing the specific needs of the intersex community, #InclusiFit marks a significant step towards inclusivity and comfort, ensuring that everyone can manage their menstrual hygiene with dignity and ease.

The event highlighted the importance of recognizing and addressing the unique needs of intersex persons. KEFWA’s participation underscored the association’s commitment to championing the rights of all athletes, regardless of their gender or anatomical differences. Through the advocacy and efforts of individuals like Christine Ngoizi, KEFWA continues to push for a more inclusive and equitable society.

As the intersex community continues to fight for their rights, the launch of #InclusiFit stands as a beacon of progress. It is a testament to the power of advocacy and the importance of developing solutions that cater to the diverse needs of all individuals. KEFWA remains dedicated to supporting initiatives that promote equality and respect for human rights, and the association looks forward to continuing its work in collaboration with advocates and organizations committed to these values.
