Ahead of the new upcoming season, we had the privilege of visiting and engaging in insightful discussions with the National Super League side, Rainbow Football Club at their training grounds in Nairobi. The focus of these discussions extended beyond the pitch, centering on an issue that has plagued many aspiring football players in Kenya – fake agents.

The ongoing campaign against fake agents, a menace causing considerable suffering to players in Kenya, took center stage in our conversation. In partnership with FIFPRO and FIFPRO Africa, alongside the Didier Drogba Foundation and the International Labour Organization (ILO), KEFWA (Kenya Footballers Welfare Association) has launched a powerful initiative to raise awareness about African players falling victim to scams orchestrated by individuals posing as agents.

Victor Ashinga, the Legal Department Officer of KEFWA, emphasized the commitment to ensuring the safety of players across all clubs in the country. He stated, “As the players’ union entrusted with safeguarding the rights and welfare of professional football players, we are resolute in our support and awareness-raising efforts, especially during the transfer period. We provide education and resources to empower our members, shielding them from unscrupulous individuals who prey on their dreams.”

Players received valuable advice during the discussion, including never making payments to agents before formally signing a contract with a club, seeking legal advice before entering into any deals, and promptly reaching out to KEFWA or FIFPRO for assistance. This collaborative effort between Rainbow FC and KEFWA exemplifies a united front against the scourge of fake agents, ensuring that Kenyan footballers can pursue their dreams with confidence and security.
