Kenya women’s national under-20 football team saw their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup come to a heartbreaking end following a tightly contested two-legged tie against Tanzania women’s national under-20 football team.
The aggregate score stood at 1-1 after both legs, but Tanzania progressed to the final qualification round after securing a 3-1 victory in the ensuing penalty shootout.
The Starlets took control of the tie in the opening leg at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, registering a hard-fought 1-0 win. In a closely matched encounter, Kenya displayed defensive organisation and tactical discipline to protect their slender lead on home soil, heading into the return fixture with a crucial advantage.
The return leg at Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam proved equally competitive. Tanzania restored parity in the 52nd minute after converting from the penalty spot, earning a 1-0 win on the day and leveling the aggregate score at 1-1. With no separating the sides over two legs, the contest was ultimately decided from 12 yards.
In the shootout, Tanzania held their composure to claim a 3-1 win, booking their place in the final round of qualifiers. For the Rising Starlets, it marked a painful conclusion to a campaign that had showcased resilience, development and belief.
Despite the narrow exit, the experience gained in high-stakes continental competition will be invaluable for the squad — particularly for the eight players who have earned call-ups to the provisional squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
While the journey to the 2026 World Cup ends at this stage, the progress made lays a strong foundation for continued growth and future success.
