Ahead of the new upcoming season, we had the privilege of visiting and engaging in insightful discussions with the National Super League side, Rainbow Football Club at their training grounds in Nairobi. The focus of these discussions extended beyond the pitch, centering on the unwavering commitment of the Kenya Footballers Welfare Association (KEFWA) to protect the interests of its members and the benefits that comes with being a KEFWA member.
“At KEFWA, our mission is clear, to champion the rights and welfare of professional football players in Kenya, both men and women,” declared Benard Mangoli, the head of the Welfare Department. As the leader of this mission, KEFWA stand resolute in sharing their story, their purpose, and why every footballer in Kenya should consider becoming a proud member of this union.
Mangoli, a former AFC Leopards FC speedy winger, understands the urgency players face. He urges them to grasp the opportunities that KEFWA offers sooner rather than later. But what are these opportunities that await the fortunate members of KEFWA?
1. Education Scholarships: “Knowledge is power, and we firmly believe in empowering our members,” Mangoli affirms. Through KEFWA’s education scholarships program, players are granted a pathway to knowledge, opening doors to a brighter future beyond the football field. Partnerships with esteemed institutions like Zetech University make education not just a dream but a tangible reality.
2. Legal Representation: In the intricate world of football contracts, the rights of players should never be in question. As a KEFWA member, you enjoy the peace of mind that comes with free legal representation, ensuring your interests are safeguarded every step of the way. It’s a vital shield in the ever-evolving game.
3. Club Linkages: Players often face challenges when seeking new opportunities, especially when recovering from injuries, experiencing a dip in form, or during the off-season. KEFWA’s non-contracted players’ program offers invaluable connections with clubs, coaches, and team officials. These connections create opportunities to further your football career, making transitions smoother.
4. Empowerment and Capacity Building: “As a union, we have created a comprehensive suite of programs meant to empower our members,” Mangoli explains. These programs include “Mind the Gap,” “Play My Part,” “Facelift,” “Road to Recovery,” “Mental Health,” “Personal Branding,” “Sensitization on the Maternity Policy,” and “Menstrual Health Hygiene Management (MHHM),” among others. KEFWA doesn’t just care about your performance on the pitch; they’re dedicated to your holistic growth.
5. Benevolent and Welfare Support: Life can throw curve balls, but when it does, KEFWA stands by its members. Benevolent and welfare support ensures that you’re never alone in times of need. It’s a safety net, a testament to the union’s commitment to the well-being of its members.
Crucially, KEFWA believes in equality, ensuring that opportunities are offered to interested and capable members without prejudice or bias. “We believe in egalitarianism,” emphasizes Mangoli. “At KEFWA, we level the playing field, ensuring equal access to opportunities for every member.”
