As the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world, the sports industry was hit hard, and KPLwas neither spared.
Games were postponed, stadiums were empty, and players were left without a source of income. But in the coastal lands of Mombasa, one player, Patson Ibrahim, refused to let the situation defeat him.
Instead of waiting for football to resume, Patson decided to take matters into his own hands. He reached out to the Kenya Footballers Welfare Association, who through their Mind The Gap program, supported his boutique business, where he wa using his creativity and passion to sell unique clothing designs that quickly gained popularity.
Patson’s story is an inspiration to players relying solely on their athletic abilities; they can use their skills and interests to create alternative income-generating opportunities.
As his business grew, he continued to train and stay in shape, but also recognized the importance of being proactive and taking control of his financial future.
In a world where sports careers can be unpredictable and short-lived, it’s crucial for athletes to have a backup plan. Through Mind The Gap program, KEFWA has been able to support businesses of Kenyan players across the country.
As a player, don’t wait for opportunities to come to you, create them yourself. Who knows? You may just discover a hidden profession and achieve success beyond your wildest dreams.
